Cailleachan's Story

BFS Samhuinn Fire Festival

This is Cailleachan's story, as part of the BFS Samhuinn Fire Festival which took place on 31 October on Calton Hill, Edinburgh

Cailleachan = the breath of the Goddess, working with conscious movement and voice examining themes of death, sacrifice and rebirth, allowing space for grief, release and new life. We are the turning of the wheel. We are the summoning, we are the spell.

Samhain (Samhuinn) = "Summer's End" and pronounced saah-win or saa-ween. Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest and the start of the coldest half of the year.  Samhain also is the beginning of the spiritual new year.

"I was fortunate to be invited to capture the journey of the Cailleachan group as part of the BFS Samhuinn Fire Festival. And what a special journey it was - I was welcomed with open arms to be part of the Cailleachan family.

"From their practice on Calton Hill on a crisp, sunny winters day, to a room full of energy as they got ready in the Little Fitzroy Cafe on Easter Road, to running around with them like the paparazzi during their final performance on the hill.

"What a wonderful world to have been a part of!"

Special thanks to:

All members of the Samhuinn Cailleachan group, especially Electra Marlen Djini.
